The Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA) has confirmed that athletes from any zone can compete in both qualifying competitions leading up to the much-anticipated Fiji Finals. This was announced by the FSSAA’s acting secretary, Biu Colati. Athletes will not be limited to a single event, encouraging broader participation at the Western and Central Qualifiers, which are set to take place in Lautoka and Suva, respectively.
In an effort to further enhance competition, the FSSAA is planning to introduce a total of four qualifying competitions. This initiative will provide athletes with increased preparation time ahead of the Fiji Finals scheduled for April 24-25 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Colati also mentioned plans to extend participation to primary school students and those who have graduated, aiming to elevate the level of competitiveness among participants.
With this year marking the 50th anniversary of Fiji’s national finals, excitement is building as the integrity and inclusivity of the athletic program continue to expand. The approach not only reflects a commitment to developing young talent but also enhances community engagement and school spirit, fostering a supportive environment for aspiring athletes.
This renewed focus on providing multiple qualifying opportunities and increasing athlete engagement reflects a hopeful direction for athletics in Fiji, creating a vibrant and enriched atmosphere for competitions to thrive. The upcoming events further promise to inspire young athletes, highlighting the importance of sports and teamwork in personal development.
