A total of 905 athletes are poised to participate in the Suva Zone 2 athletics competition over the next two days at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, aiming to qualify for the prestigious Fiji Finals next month. This year marks a notable milestone as the national finals celebrate their 50th anniversary, adding an exciting atmosphere to the competition.
Savenca Muamua, president of the Fiji Secondary School Amateur Athletics Central, has underscored the heightened intensity of this year’s event, with athletes fiercely competing for the limited spots available at the finals. In light of increasing crime and drug-related issues, a significant police presence, including canine units, will be deployed to ensure the safety and security of both participants and spectators.
The competition will be broadcast live on FBC Sports and viti.plus for international audiences. In addition to the Suva Zone 2, six other zone competitions are set to occur across Fiji on Thursday and Friday, including the Ovalau Zone, Macuata Zone One and Two, Bua, Savusavu, and Taveuni, while the Lautoka Zone is scheduled to compete on Friday and Saturday at Churchill Park.
As the celebrations honor five decades of athletic achievement, they additionally aim to inspire young athletes to aspire to excellence. The excitement surrounding these events fosters a sense of community and enthusiasm for sports throughout Fiji, highlighting the country’s vibrant athletic culture.
This year’s competition is more than just a sporting event; it serves as a platform to encourage youth engagement and exemplify the spirit of perseverance and dedication in athletics.
