Athletics Fiji has established a focused plan for the next four weeks following their initial time trials aimed at selecting the team for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games. Held last Saturday, these trials served as an important platform for athletes to connect with one another and for coaches to evaluate their performance, particularly those who had recently participated in the Fiji Finals.
Coach Antonio Raboiliku emphasized the significance of these trials in fostering team cohesion, stating, “It was the first time trial that we had to allow the athletes to blend in together.” He noted that while this initial trial was more about introductions, the preparations would become more detailed and intensive in the weeks to follow.
Athletes continue to train at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, with plans for additional trials to come. Raboiliku explained that the number of trials will depend on facility availability, aiming for two to three more opportunities for athletes to showcase their progress. The focus is also on facilitating recovery for athletes, many of whom have just completed significant competitions.
The results from the trials varied, but Raboiliku expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, as they provided a clear direction for training over the coming weeks. “We need the environment for them to produce their maximum result,” he said, signaling optimism about the preparations leading up to the Mini Games.
Set to take place in Koror, Palau, from June 29 to July 9, the Pacific Mini Games offer a vital opportunity for Fiji’s athletes to excel on an international stage, bolstered by the support and structured training programs in place. This concerted preparation not only promotes individual athlete growth but also contributes positively to the overall athletic landscape in Fiji.
With an optimistic outlook and the dedication displayed by athletes and coaches alike, there is hope that Fiji’s representation at the upcoming Mini Games will be both successful and inspiring.
