Seventeen-year-old Eshita Prasad, a dedicated volunteer, credits her experiences at ashram camps with significantly shaping her values, identity, and life perspective. Organized by the Fiji Sevashram Sangha and led by Swami Sanyuktanand, these camps provide a comprehensive spiritual, socio-cultural, and educational program aimed at empowering youth.
Eshita, who has attended these camps since she was just four years old, has progressed to the role of an active junior volunteer. She engages in dance, music, and various youth activities within the ashram, illustrating her commitment to her community. “Coming to the ashram has taught me a lot of moral values, respect, and discipline,” she shared. This environment has also deepened her understanding of her religion, allowing her to learn mantras and explore scriptures, which she incorporates into her daily life.
Her time spent at the ashram has instilled in her a sense of pride about her culture, empowering her to confidently discuss it with her peers outside of school. Eshita recognizes that the teachings from the ashram have highlighted the significance of yoga in achieving focus, which has led to improved academic performance.
The camps also address crucial social issues that impact youth today, such as drug abuse and cyberbullying, promoting positive life choices among participants. A particularly popular activity, known as lathi, or traditional stick fighting for self-defense, stands out to Eshita. “Lathi is very fun and a useful skill. We go around teaching younger kids and get to know a lot of people during this activity,” she explained.
Eshita believes that these camps play a crucial role in nurturing responsible and successful members of society, reflecting a hopeful future in which youth are equipped with the tools and values necessary to overcome challenges and make a positive impact in their communities.
