The Fiji Aquatics Open Nationals concluded over the weekend, showcasing remarkable athletic achievements and the emergence of new national swimming records. Notably, Reuben Taylor of the Barracuda Swim Club set a new time record of 24.45 seconds in the 15-16 age group for the 50m freestyle, breaking the previous record of 24.53 seconds established by Tolu Young during the LC Champs in 2020.

In addition to Taylor’s impressive feat, 13-year-old Grace Khelan made waves in the 50m butterfly for the 13-14 age category, clocking in at 30.21 seconds, surpassing Eden Waqanabete’s former record of 30.51 seconds set in 2022. Meanwhile, Thaddeus Kwong also shined, setting a new record in the 50-meter backstroke for the 15-16 age category with a time of 28.03 seconds, breaking the record of 28.63 seconds held by Hansel McCaig since May 2019.

The event saw strong participation and support from the swimming community, with organizers expressing gratitude towards not only the athletes but also the officials and coaches who played crucial roles in the event’s success.

Reflecting on the significance of this event, Fiji Swimming President Lucy Erasito has previously commended the dedication and hard work that athletes, like Khelan and McCaig, continue to demonstrate. The achievements at the Nationals signal a hopeful future for swimming in Fiji, nurturing a new generation of talented swimmers with the potential to excel on both national and international stages.
