The Fijian Government has approved the removal of coastal mangroves at Laucala Beach to facilitate the ambitious Nokonoko Integrated Development project, a multi-million-dollar residential and commercial hub located along the Suva-Nausori corridor. This significant decision is backed by Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo, who emphasized that the initiative balances economic growth with environmental protection.
Minister Vosarogo stated, “This decision reflects our government’s balanced approach to progress, ensuring development goes hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship.” He highlighted the need for better housing, jobs, and infrastructure for the Fijian people, while acknowledging environmental concerns. The project’s approval comes after a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and extensive community consultations, which were met with largely positive feedback from residents eager for improved amenities and rising property values.
The Minister assured that the initiative is so designed that it adheres to high sustainability standards, asserting, “We are not abandoning our environmental obligations; we are upholding them.” Under the stipulations from the Ministry of Environment, developers are required to replant mangroves in designated conservation zones and support long-term ecological monitoring.
With backing from both local and international investors, the Nokonoko project is expected to create hundreds of construction and permanent job opportunities while stimulating new business activities in the eastern growth corridor of the capital.
