The Fijian Government has officially appointed Ms. Rokobua Naiyaga as the new chairperson of the Higher Education Commission, succeeding Steve Chand. The appointment, effective from February 17, 2026, was announced by Aseri Radrodro, the Minister for Education, who made the decision in consultation with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

With over 50 years of experience in the education sector, Ms. Naiyaga is well-prepared to lead the commission at a pivotal moment for Fiji’s higher education landscape. Her extensive background includes national education governance, public sector reform, school leadership, and curriculum development, which the Minister believes will be invaluable in guiding the commission’s strategic direction.

Minister Radrodro highlighted that the commission’s primary responsibilities include ensuring quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across Fiji’s higher education institutions. Strengthening oversight, addressing systemic gaps, and fostering collaboration among registered institutions are regarded as critical steps to enhance educational outcomes nationwide.

Moreover, the Minister expressed optimism that under Ms. Naiyaga’s leadership, there would be a heightened focus on raising standards in higher education, paving the way for a more responsive and future-oriented tertiary sector in Fiji. He also took a moment to thank Steve Chand for his dedicated service and leadership during his tenure as chairperson.

This transition in leadership reflects a commitment to advancing Fiji’s educational framework, signaling a hopeful outlook for the future of higher education in the country.
