Dr. Apisalome Movono has been appointed as the new CEO of the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), effective January 2, 2025. This decision comes after a thorough recruitment process carried out by the TSLS Board, adhering to the protocols established by the TSLS Act and the principles of good governance.
Dr. Movono brings with him a wealth of experience in education leadership, public sector reform, and strategic policy development. His depth of knowledge is particularly focused on tertiary education systems, organizational leadership, and stakeholder engagement. His leadership is anticipated to enhance TSLS’s mission to provide equitable access to tertiary education and skills development for the people of Fiji.
Holding a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Tourism Management from Griffith University in Australia, Dr. Movono’s academic credentials also include a Master of Arts in Tourism Studies, a Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, and a Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs and Tourism Studies, for which he received prestigious awards, including the Gold Medal for the most outstanding all-round student.
Dr. Movono has occupied significant academic and leadership roles in New Zealand and Australia, most recently serving as Associate Professor at the University of the South Pacific. His contributions extend to various high-level national and regional review committees, such as the Fiji Integrated Rural Development Framework Review and the Fiji Great Council of Chiefs Review.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Movono has been actively involved in scholarship governance, having served as a senior member of the Massey University Scholarship Committee and the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Selection Panel. His expertise has been influenced by his extensive research in public policy, tourism resilience, education access, and sustainable development in the Pacific.
The TSLS Board expresses optimism for the future, anticipating that under Dr. Movono’s guidance, the organization will embark on a new phase of growth, enhancing its impact, innovation, and the trust it garners from the public.
