The chairman of the Public Service Commission, Luke Rokovada, has announced the appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new Ambassador to Japan. Currently, Mr. Chand holds the position of permanent secretary for the Civil Service. He is succeeding Filimoni Waqabaca, who is set to return to Fiji to take over as the chief executive officer of the Fiji Development Bank, with this transition taking effect on January 15.

Although Mr. Chand’s appointment has been confirmed, the specific date for him to begin his duties in Japan has yet to be determined. Rokovada mentioned, “At this stage, it has not been established when Mr. Chand will be taking up his position in Japan.”

This appointment is a significant move for Fiji’s diplomatic relations, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to international engagement. The leadership transition at the Fiji Development Bank also showcases the internal career mobility within Fijian public service, highlighting opportunities for professionals to serve in various capacities.

As Mr. Chand prepares for his diplomatic role, it opens possibilities for strengthening ties between Fiji and Japan, which can lead to beneficial partnerships in various sectors like trade, education, and tourism.
