The $200 Back to School program is once again set to assist families in Fiji as announced by Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel during a press conference with Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. For the upcoming academic year, the government has allocated $40 million for this initiative, which has seen a total investment of $180 million over the past three years to help ease the financial burden associated with school costs.
Mr. Immanuel emphasized that this support is crucial for families, stating that in 2023 alone, the program provided $44.7 million to over 223,000 students. The number of beneficiaries remained substantial in subsequent years, with 212,000 students assisted in 2024 and 213,000 in 2025. Eligibility for this program is targeted at families with a combined income below $50,000, ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder children’s education.
Education Minister Radrodro outlined that the $200 can be utilized for a range of school-related expenses, including uniforms, shoes, school bags, and stationery. For families residing in maritime islands, the funds can be accessed via Telegraphic Money Orders at Post Offices, making the assistance widely available. Application forms will be accessible at schools and through the websites of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, designed to encourage parents who may have hesitated to share personal information.
To facilitate smooth payment processes, the government will cover all service fees. Parents are reminded to provide accurate information, particularly their mobile details, to avoid payment delays. This initiative not only aims to support families but also reflects the government’s commitment to promoting educational readiness among students.
The program aligns with previous announcements whereby Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad noted that around 200,000 students benefit annually from such support, reinforcing the community’s investment in the future of its children. The financial aid represents a collaborative effort to ensure that all students embark on their new academic year fully equipped and ready to learn, symbolizing hope and commitment towards enhancing education in Fiji.
