Fiji and Wallis & Futuna Forge Development Cooperation Pact

Fiji and Wallis & Futuna have embarked on a fresh chapter of cooperation in the Pacific by signing a pivotal Declaration of Intent focused on Development Cooperation. This significant agreement aims to enhance diplomatic relations and foster deeper collaborative efforts in various crucial development sectors.

The historic signing took place at the Territorial Assembly House and was officiated by Lenora Qereqeretabua, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Speaker of Parliament for Fiji. The event was observed by notable figures including customary leaders, Assembly President Hon. Munipoese Muli’aka’aka, and Secretary General Thierry Dousset.

The Declaration sets forth a framework to advance collaboration in essential areas such as health, education, human resource development, trade, agriculture, transport, climate change, culture, land development, mineral resources, and tourism. To ensure effective implementation, a Joint Working Group will be established, finalizing an extensive negotiation process that spanned over three years between the two governments.

Qereqeretabua remarked that the agreement marks a transition “from dialogue to delivery,” showcasing a mutual commitment to foster robust regional partnerships and build a resilient Pacific. Leaders from Wallis & Futuna echoed this sentiment, recognizing the Declaration as a crucial foundation for sustainable growth and community resilience.

Additionally, Fiji conveyed appreciation to the French Republic for its steadfast support throughout this negotiation process. The five-year agreement is designed to boost economic opportunities, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and strengthen the ties that unite the Pacific family.

This collaboration reflects a broader trend in the Pacific region, where nations have been increasingly working together to address shared challenges and promote cooperative strategies. Recently, Fiji has engaged with various countries to bolster bilateral relations and tackle issues concerning climate change and sustainable development, demonstrating its commitment to fostering a unified and resilient regional community. The positive trajectory of this partnership signals a hopeful outlook for both Fiji and Wallis & Futuna, as they collaborate to enhance their economies and strengthen regional solidarity.
