Fiji and US Forge Stronger Ties for a Prosperous Future

Fiji and the United States have pledged to enhance their relationship to foster economic growth, defense and security, tourism, trade and investment, climate resilience, and cultural connections. This agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Dr. Kurt Campbell.

The discussions took place during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, providing a platform for both nations to explore ways to deepen their cooperation on key mutual interests. Prime Minister Rabuka expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the U.S. to Fiji and the broader Pacific, emphasizing initiatives that promote socio-economic development, climate resilience, and regional stability.

Rabuka acknowledged the U.S. commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Fiji, particularly through realigning cooperation to support the nation’s development priorities. He also noted the establishment of a regional office for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Suva and the expansion of Peace Corps operations in Fiji and the wider Pacific, marking a significant increase in support for the region.

The recent visit from Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn underscored this commitment to boosting assistance to Fiji. Furthermore, Rabuka expressed appreciation for the newly signed Fiji-U.S. Air Transport Agreement (ATA), which will open new routes for Fiji Airways. This agreement, signed by Rabuka and Dr. Campbell after Cabinet approval, is expected to significantly impact Fiji’s aviation industry, tourism, trade, and economy, with Fiji Airways initiating flights from Nadi to Dallas, Texas starting December 10.

Prime Minister Rabuka also recognized the contributions of the Fijian diaspora in the U.S. to Fiji’s development through remittances and investments. He highlighted the importance of strengthening engagement with the diaspora via Fiji’s recently reopened Embassy in Washington D.C.

The significance of the Forum Leaders Meeting was reiterated as a chance to bolster U.S. collaboration with the Pacific region, with plans for the third U.S.-Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Summit next year. Dr. Campbell reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to enhanced cooperation with Fiji and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Rabuka for his leadership and dedication to the Ocean of Peace Concept.
