Fiji and US Forge New Air Transport Alliance to Boost Tourism and Trade

Fiji has established a significant bilateral air transport agreement with the United States, enhancing their diplomatic relations. The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, yesterday, marking the conclusion of the third day of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting.

The Fiji Open Skies Agreement aims to promote tourism and trade between Fiji and the US. US Ambassador to Fiji, Marie Damour, highlighted that this agreement would foster increased travel and economic activities between the two nations.

Damour noted that Fiji Airways’ collaborations with JetBlue, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines have strengthened aviation connections, and the new agreement is set to enhance this partnership for the future. She emphasized that by finalizing this agreement, Fiji aligns itself with a network of partners dedicated to an open and contemporary air services market.

The Ambassador reiterated the United States’ commitment to its strong relationship with Fiji, grounded in a history of peacekeeping cooperation, regional security and safety, and the potential for closer economic ties moving forward.
