Fiji and U.S. Boost Bilateral Ties for a Sustainable Future

Fiji and the United States have pledged to enhance their relationship to foster economic growth, defense and security, tourism, trade and investment, climate resilience, and connections between their people. This commitment was expressed during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Dr. Kurt Campbell.

The discussion took place alongside the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM53) and provided a platform for both nations to explore ways to deepen their collaboration on issues significant to multilateral and bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Rabuka expressed gratitude to the U.S. for its ongoing support to Fiji and the wider Pacific region through various initiatives aimed at promoting socio-economic development, enhancing climate resilience, and ensuring regional peace and security. He acknowledged the U.S. commitment to bolster bilateral relations by aligning cooperation with Fiji’s development goals.

Rabuka also highlighted the establishment of a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) regional office in Suva and the expansion of Peace Corps operations in Fiji and the Pacific. The recent visit by Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn underscores their dedication to enhancing support for Fiji and the region.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Rabuka noted the signing of a new Air Transport Agreement (ATA) with the U.S., which will introduce new routes for Fiji Airways, contributing significantly to the country’s tourism, trade, and economy. Flights from Nadi to Dallas, Texas, are set to commence on December 10.

In addition, he expressed appreciation for the Fijian diaspora in the U.S., acknowledging their crucial role in Fiji’s development through remittances and investment. Rabuka stressed that advancing engagement with the diaspora is an important area for cooperation, particularly through Fiji’s re-opened Embassy in Washington D.C.

The meeting emphasized the significance of the Forum Leaders Meeting in enhancing U.S. collaboration with the Pacific region, with next year marking the third U.S. – Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Summit. Dr. Campbell reiterated the U.S. commitment to strengthening ties with Fiji and thanked Prime Minister Rabuka for his leadership and dedication to the Ocean of Peace Concept.
