Fiji and Tonga Join Forces Against Arms Trafficking Threat

Police in Fiji are collaborating with Tongan authorities to investigate the seizure of a firearm and around 600 rounds of ammunition that were found aboard the MV Malau in Suva Harbour. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCS) has completed its investigation and provided a report to the police.

Tudravu stated that while the investigation is ongoing, further details about the intended recipient, who may be a high chief, cannot be disclosed at this stage. In light of this incident, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged authorities to stay vigilant, emphasizing the importance of national security following the seizure on March 17, 2025.

The operation was carried out by the Fiji naval ship RFNS Timo, which intercepted the MV Malau and escorted it to Suva Harbour for the confiscation of the weapons. Rabuka praised the combined efforts of law enforcement, including the Fiji Navy and the FRCS, in intercepting the shipment and maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s borders.

This incident is part of a larger concern regarding arms trafficking in the region, with authorities noting a disturbing trend involving illegal arms connected to individuals of social prominence. The proactive measures taken by Fiji’s law enforcement demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring compliance with firearm regulations.

The ongoing investigations reflect the importance of community engagement in reporting suspicious activities, as authorities strive to foster a safer environment for all Fijians. There is optimism that these efforts will contribute to reducing the risk of future incidents and enhancing the security of Fiji’s maritime environment.
