Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji recently acknowledged Tonga’s interest in establishing a full diplomatic mission in Fiji during a significant bilateral meeting with Tongan Prime Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke. This first official engagement took place at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort during the TROIKA Leaders’ gathering.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and regional collaboration in various sectors. Key topics included trade and investment, connectivity, defense and security, climate resilience, and fostering people-to-people links. Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his warm welcome to the Tongan Prime Minister and his delegation, reiterating Fiji’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Tonga.

Both leaders recognized the value of signing a Development Cooperation Agreement (DCA) to align their strategic engagements based on shared priorities. They also championed the “Ocean of Peace” concept as a Pacific approach to nurturing unity and prosperity, emphasizing this initiative’s importance for regional and global collaboration.

The meeting signifies a hopeful step towards deeper ties between Fiji and Tonga, showcasing their mutual commitment to addressing challenges like climate change and fostering sustainable development in the Pacific region. The increased diplomatic exchange may serve as a catalyst for shared growth and unity among Pacific nations.
