President Naiqama Lalabalavu of Fiji recently received the Letters of Credence from the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Fiji, Kanbar Hossein-Bor. Emphasizing Fiji’s strong historical ties with Great Britain, President Lalabalavu noted that elements of British governance are still evident in Fiji’s colonial-era buildings and legal structures. “Great Britain is very much a part of us,” he stated, highlighting how colonial history has shaped the nation.
During the formal reception, the president discussed Fiji’s key priorities, particularly its commitment to addressing climate change—a pressing issue for Pacific Island nations. He stressed the importance of collaboration with development partners, like the United Kingdom, to promote sustainable development and face environmental challenges head-on. “Our robust and multifaceted relationship in areas such as climate change, sustainable development, and defense underscores the depth of the Fiji-UK bilateral relationship,” he said.
In recalling Fiji’s journey from colonialism to becoming a modern nation-state, President Lalabalavu reflected on the eventful history over the past 55 years and expressed optimism about the future of Fiji-UK relations. He encouraged the new High Commissioner to continue fostering this positive relationship, ensuring that both countries can achieve greater heights together.
This reception marks a continuation of Fiji’s diplomatic efforts and reflects a mutual commitment to working together in various sectors, thereby nurturing a hopeful outlook for future collaborations that benefit both nations. The historical connections offer a solid foundation for advancing shared goals in a modern context.
