Fiji and Spain: A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations

Fiji’s recently launched Foreign Policy White Paper emphasizes the importance of enhancing development assistance through stronger multilateral and bilateral ties with Pacific nations and international partners. This sentiment was conveyed by Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua during a farewell meeting with Gaël Sánchez Cano, the Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Spain in Fiji, who is wrapping up his diplomatic term.

Qereqeretabua reiterated the principles outlined in the Foreign Policy White Paper and the “Ocean of Peace” initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka. She affirmed Fiji’s dedication to collaborating closely with development partners in the Pacific to achieve common goals related to economic growth, peace and security, as well as sustainable development.

In this context, the Assistant Minister welcomed discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation on issues of shared interest between Fiji and Spain. She expressed her gratitude to Cano for his committed service to Fiji and conveyed her best wishes for his future endeavors.

Cano praised Prime Minister Rabuka for the Ocean of Peace initiative, reaffirming Spain’s support for this important project. He also recognized the significance of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, highlighting its role in providing clear and effective guidance to advance mutual priorities and shared objectives.
