The Fijian Government is actively monitoring the intensifying tensions in the Middle East, particularly regarding recent developments involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Foreign Affairs Minister Sakiasi Ditoka stated that the authorities are vigilant as reports of incidents emerge from various parts of the region.
Ditoka emphasized that Fiji’s diplomatic representatives in the Middle East are maintaining connections with local authorities and staying in touch with Fijian nationals. He assured that, as of now, no verified reports have indicated that Fijians have been directly affected by the ongoing unrest.
It is noted that Fijians reside and work in several Gulf countries, including Qatar. In light of this, the Ministry is reviewing its contingency protocols to ensure readiness for any necessary consular support. The minister urged Fijians currently in the region to remain calm, adhere to official advisories issued by local authorities, keep communication open with family members, and register with the nearest Fiji Mission if they have not done so already.
Ditoka reassured families back in Fiji, stressing that the situation is being closely monitored with updates provided if circumstances change significantly. Further, he called for restraint, dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, urging the importance of adhering to international law.
In a related development, the Government of the Solomon Islands has issued a travel advisory for its citizens due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Solomon Islanders are advised against traveling to the region until further notice and those already there are urged to take precautions, remain composed, and stay informed through reliable updates.
This proactive stance by both Fiji and the Solomon Islands highlights the importance of diplomatic vigilance during times of heightened geopolitical tensions.
