Fiji’s Minister for Immigration, Viliame Naupoto, recently announced the country’s interest in implementing ePassport access through New Zealand’s SmartGate system, mirroring a similar agreement with Australia. This development, discussed during a meeting with New Zealand’s Minister for Customs, Casey Costello, in Suva, aims to enhance the travel experience for Fijian passport holders, promising more efficient border control processes.
In addition to addressing travel facilitation, both ministers emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking. They acknowledged the need for improved mechanisms for real-time data sharing and coordinated border intelligence to effectively tackle these issues.
