The Ministry of Housing has secured a substantial $15 million funding allocation from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZMFAT) to bolster housing initiatives in Fiji over the next three years. This financial support will focus on key areas such as Technical Assistance, Strategic Planning, and Institutional Strengthening, in addition to the development of a National Housing Database.

Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, emphasized that this initiative marks a crucial step toward fostering a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for Fiji. He highlighted the collaborative nature of this partnership, which is rooted in mutual trust and aimed at enhancing institutional capacity and strength.

The funding is set to complement the ongoing efforts of the Ministry in providing affordable housing to Fijians. Minister Nalumisa noted that the agreement is designed to deliver measurable results, with a strong focus on sustainable development outcomes. Both parties will engage in rigorous accountability measures, adhering to Development Assistance Criteria to ensure relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability throughout the project’s duration.

Minister Nalumisa expressed gratitude towards the New Zealand government for its commitment to advancing the economic and social development of Fiji. Charlotte Darlow, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, echoed this sentiment, stating that the funding is expected to drive further development and demonstrate the significant impact of partnership initiatives in the realm of social housing.

This partnership not only signifies the commitment of both nations to improve housing conditions in Fiji but also serves as a model for future collaborations aimed at promoting sustainable development and enhancing community welfare.

In summary, Fiji’s collaboration with New Zealand represents a progressive step towards improving housing infrastructure and social welfare, paving the way for sustainable development and community empowerment. This initiative underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing local challenges and highlights a promise of a brighter future for Fijians.
