Fiji is preparing to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur, as announced by Lenora Qereqeretabua, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs. This decision coincides with the celebrations of Fiji’s 67th National Day and Malaysia’s 61st Malaysia Day.
Qereqeretabua emphasized that the reopening of the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur aims to strengthen bilateral relations and boost trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia. Although she did not provide a specific timeline for the reopening, she noted that Kuala Lumpur would serve as a key hub for trade activities post-reopening.
She extended her congratulations to Malaysia, acknowledging the longstanding relationship between the two nations, which began with Fiji’s assistance to Malaysia during challenging times. Qereqeretabua referred to the phrase “Bula Maleya,” mentioned by the Malaysian High Commissioner during his address, signifying the deep-rooted partnership.
The High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji, Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, remarked on the complementary ideals of Malaysia’s Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka initiative and Fiji’s commitment to unity and prosperity. He explained that the Malaysia Madani framework, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, highlights sustainability, innovation, and compassion.
Mr. Idrus also traced the historical ties between Fiji and Malaysia back to the 1950s, during the Malayan Emergency, when 1600 Fijians displayed notable courage. He pointed out that Malaysia is committed to maintaining strong trade relations with Fiji, consistently ranking among its top ten trading partners.
Lastly, Mr. Idrus expressed pride in the contributions of Malaysian companies operating in Fiji, such as the Carpenters Group and Shangri-La, and offered his full support for their continued growth and the prospects for new businesses.
