Fiji and Malaysia Set to Strengthen Ties with New Mission Opening

Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, announced plans to reopen the nation’s diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur during the celebrations of Fiji’s 67th National Day and Malaysia’s 61st Malaysia Day. Ms. Qereqeretabua emphasized that this move aims to strengthen bilateral ties and boost trade relations between the two countries.

She stated, “Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is re-opening soon,” while not disclosing a specific timeline. She noted that Kuala Lumpur would serve as a central hub for trade following the reopening.

Congratulating Malaysia on its national day, Ms. Qereqeretabua highlighted the enduring history of cooperation between the two nations, recalling Fiji’s support to Malaysia during challenging times. She mentioned the phrase “Bula Maleya,” used by Malaysia’s High Commissioner in his speech, reflecting their long-standing partnership.

Describing the relationship as robust and constructive, she expressed aspirations to learn from Malaysia’s development achievements.

Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, remarked on the connection between Malaysia’s “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka” initiative and Fiji’s values of unity, patriotism, sustainability, and prosperity. He explained that this initiative, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, focuses on sustainability, prosperity, innovation, trust, and compassion, with Jiwa Merdeka meaning “patriotic spirit.”

Mr. Idrus reflected on the historical ties between Fiji and Malaysia, tracing back to the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency, when 1,600 Fijians displayed remarkable courage. He noted that their service laid the groundwork for a strong bond between the two countries.

Emphasizing Malaysia’s open economy, he remarked on the importance of its trade relationships worldwide, including with Fiji, and highlighted that Malaysia consistently ranks among Fiji’s top ten trading partners, showcasing the strength of their bilateral trade.

He also expressed pride in the contributions of Malaysian companies operating in Fiji, such as the Carpenters Group, Spirit of Endeavour, and Shangri-La, and pledged support for their continued growth, welcoming new businesses looking to make their mark in Fiji.
