Fiji is poised to enhance its agricultural trade and innovation by fostering closer ties with Malaysia. This initiative was emphasized during a recent meeting led by Dr. Andrew Tukana, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, alongside Ratu Etueni Qiolele Caucau, Fiji’s High Commissioner to Malaysia. The discussions took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Raiwaqa, focusing on critical agricultural priorities for Fiji.

Among the key topics discussed were the expansion of coconut derivative exports to Malaysia, improving local market access, and diminishing import reliance through innovation and local production. The meeting also underscored the importance of youth involvement in the agricultural sector and the potential for promoting climate-smart, commercial farming practices.

Ratu Caucau reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development ambitions, particularly via capacity building, technology transfer, and policy cooperation through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme. He highlighted the need for formalizing and strengthening bilateral agreements to advance mutual trade and sectoral growth.

Dr. Tukana and his team received commendations for their ongoing efforts to promote national development and bolster Fiji’s food security and economic growth, even in the face of existing challenges. This collaboration holds promise for both nations, aiming to cultivate a sustainable agricultural future and enhance economic resilience.
