Fiji is set to strengthen its partnership with Korea through a commitment that sees Korea backing 13 major development projects in Fiji, projected to exceed 72 million US dollars by 2025. This development was highlighted during a recent meeting between Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Raijeli Taga, and the Korean Ambassador to Fiji, Mr. Kim Jin Hyung.
These strategic projects are intended to elevate the livelihoods of Fijian communities, focusing on vital sectors such as renewable energy, healthcare, agriculture, climate change adaptation, disaster risk resilience, and education. Dr. Taga expressed her appreciation for Korea’s sustained support, particularly through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and emphasized the commitment of Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to further deepen this collaboration.
Ambassador Kim acknowledged Dr. Taga on her new role and expressed optimism that the bilateral relations will achieve new heights. Key projects on the agenda include the Ovalau Island solar power and agricultural coexistence project, the reconstruction of the Makogai Aquaculture Research Center, a $10 million National Rehabilitation Center in Tamavua, and a $9.77 million Educational Capacity Building Project at Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science.
Next year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Fiji, underscoring a partnership built on shared ideals of democracy, peace, and the rule of law. The ongoing collaboration promises not just immediate benefits to the Fijian populace but also affirms Korea’s role in contributing to sustainable development in the Pacific region.
This partnership represents a significant step forward for Fiji, aligning well with previous support initiatives that have included healthcare infrastructure enhancements and investments towards achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The future of Fiji’s development continues to look hopeful with these substantial commitments in place.
