Fiji’s Cabinet has approved the signing of an Exchange of Notes with Japan for the procurement of a Disaster Response Multi-Purpose vessel. This initiative falls under the Japan Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP), which aims to bolster Fiji’s capabilities in disaster response.

The Japanese Government is set to provide grant funding of approximately 1.765 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to around FJD 27.2 million, for the acquisition of the vessel. Equipped with advanced navigation systems and essential support machinery for loading and unloading general cargo, this vessel is designed to enhance Fiji’s readiness and resilience in responding to potential disasters.

This move complements previous initiatives between the two nations, as highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad. He acknowledged Japan’s longstanding support towards Fiji’s development in various sectors, including infrastructure, education, health, and disaster response. Such collaborations are crucial as Fiji faces frequent natural disasters amplified by climate change.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that the recent agreement for the multi-purpose vessel aligns with a broader context of Japan’s support, including a standby disaster loan of approximately FJD 72 million, which was also signed to aid recovery and rehabilitation following natural calamities. This ongoing partnership not only strengthens Fiji’s disaster management capacities but also reinforces the commitment of both nations towards achieving sustainable development goals.

This positive development signifies hope for enhanced disaster preparedness for Fiji, ensuring that the nation remains equipped to handle the challenges posed by natural disasters in the future.
