The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) hosted a significant courtesy visit from Colonel Eriko Nakaoka, the non-resident Japanese Defence Attaché, on February 26, 2025. This visit underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen military ties between Fiji and Japan.
Upon his arrival, Colonel Nakaoka received a formal welcome with a quarter guard at the Strategic Headquarters, emphasizing the importance of the occasion. A subsequent formal meeting took place with Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the RFMF. Their discussions centered on mutual military interests and strategies for enhancing cooperation, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to shared strategic objectives.
Colonel Nakaoka also visited Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, engaging with Brigadier General Onisivoro Covunisaqa, the Commander of Land Forces. This interaction highlights the significance of collaboration in addressing common security challenges in the Pacific region and improving defense mechanisms.
This engagement is part of a broader trend in which Fiji is strengthening its diplomatic and military relationships with regional partners, including previous discussions held between RFMF leadership and Japanese officials. As Fiji and Japan enhance their collaboration through joint training exercises and capacity-building initiatives, it is anticipated that these efforts will contribute to a more stable and secure Indo-Pacific region.
Such diplomatic engagements symbolize a positive future for defense partnerships in the Pacific, fostering peace, stability, and mutual understanding among the nations involved.
