Fiji has taken a significant step forward in enhancing its digital safety with the signing of a cyber security agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This agreement, marked at the Prime Minister’s office in Suva, is set to enhance the cyber security capabilities across Pacific Island countries over a three-year period, focusing on protecting critical infrastructure and government systems from rising cyber threats.
Berenado Daveta, the Permanent Secretary for Policing, expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support and emphasized the vital role of digitalization as a transformative tool, while also highlighting the accompanying cyber risks. The increasing incidents of cyber attacks across the region, including notable ransomware attacks in Papua New Guinea and other Pacific nations, underscore the urgent need for robust cyber defenses. Recent attacks have targeted Fiji’s own government systems and attacked governmental institutions across Palau and Tonga as well.
Mr. Daveta described the partnership with JICA as both timely and crucial for building stronger cyber security frameworks not only in Fiji but throughout neighboring nations. Satoshi Wakasugi, JICA’s Resident Representative, reiterated Japan’s commitment to sharing successful cyber security practices from Asia to the Pacific and expressed pride in participating in this significant initiative.
This collaboration not only enhances Fiji’s cyber defenses but also strengthens the historic friendship between Japan and Fiji, aiming to serve as a model for cooperative resilience against digital threats in the Pacific. Past articles underscore this ongoing commitment to cybersecurity, including discussions about Fiji establishing its National Computer Emergency Response Team and its collaboration with Australia on cyber initiatives.
Looking forward, both governments are hopeful that these efforts will foster enhanced regional cooperation, ultimately aiming to cultivate a secure digital environment for all Pacific nations. As Fiji takes these proactive measures, it is paving the way for a strong digital infrastructure that promotes safety and connectivity in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
