Japan and Fiji have formalized a significant partnership with a $27.2 million grant aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness in Fiji through the acquisition of a Disaster Response Multipurpose Vessel. This initiative, part of Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme, is set to improve Fiji’s ability to respond to disasters, particularly in remote islands, while also supporting rural development.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted that the vessel will play a crucial role in emergency responses, aiding in the delivery of assistance and accessing vital services across Fiji’s maritime zones. This project falls under the broader “Co-creation for Common Agenda” initiative, which focuses on strengthening disaster prevention and preparedness across the Pacific region.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the vessel’s multi-functional capabilities will enhance national capacity and improve the quality of life for residents in the outer islands. Rabuka noted that Japan’s support underscores the two nations’ strong bilateral ties and shared commitment to resilience and sustainable development.
Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii expressed his country’s pleasure in contributing to Fiji’s developmental efforts, stating that the vessel represents a symbol of the collaborative spirit between Japan and Fiji. This partnership is grounded in previous agreements and support, including a standby disaster loan, which further illustrate Japan’s dedication to assisting Fiji’s recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the face of climate change-related disasters.
