Fiji and Japan Forge Stronger Military Ties: A New Era of Defense Collaboration

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) received a courtesy visit from Colonel Eriko Nakaoka, the non-resident Japanese Defence Attaché, on February 26, 2025. This visit comes as part of ongoing efforts to deepen military ties between Fiji and Japan.

Upon arrival, Colonel Nakaoka was greeted with a quarter guard at the Strategic Headquarters, underscoring the importance of his visit. A formal meeting followed with Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the RFMF. The discussions between the two military leaders focused on mutual military interests and enhancing cooperation between the two nations, reaffirming their commitment to shared strategic goals.

Additionally, Colonel Nakaoka visited Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, where he met with Brigadier General Onisivoro Covunisaqa, the Commander of Land Forces. This visit reinforces the importance of fostering collaboration not only in defense but also in addressing common security challenges in the region.

This engagement mirrors a recent trend of strengthening diplomatic and military relations between Fiji and its regional partners, including prior meetings between RFMF leadership and Japanese officials. As both nations embrace these collaborations, they are likely to enhance their joint training exercises and capacity-building initiatives, which will contribute to a more stable and secure Indo-Pacific region.

Such positive engagements symbolize a hopeful future for defense partnerships in the Pacific, promoting peace, stability, and mutual understanding among the nations involved.
