Fiji and Israel are taking steps to enhance their parliamentary cooperation, as discussed in a recent meeting between Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, MK Amir Ohana. The talks focused on exchanging knowledge about democratic practices and parliamentary initiatives, particularly those aimed at youth and women, as well as efforts to boost female representation in Fiji’s Parliament. They also addressed regional priorities like the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and the Ocean of Peace Declaration.

Proposals for reciprocal visits between the Knesset and the Fijian Parliament emerged as a means to solidify this collaboration. Speaker Ohana expressed gratitude for Fiji’s understanding and support concerning Israel’s situations and praised Prime Minister Rabuka for his dedication to peace and regional stability.

Currently, Prime Minister Rabuka is in Israel for the inauguration of Fiji’s diplomatic mission, symbolizing a milestone in Fiji’s international relations. This diplomatic engagement indicates a broader initiative by Fiji to deepen ties with Israel, evident in their longstanding relationship since 1970, encompassing cooperation in areas like agriculture, security, and climate change adaptation.

The ongoing collaboration between Fiji and Israel demonstrates a commitment to addressing shared global challenges and fostering peace and stability. The intended establishment of this partnership reinforces mutual interests and opens up new avenues for bilateral and multilateral cooperation that could yield significant benefits in regional and global contexts.
