President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu of Fiji welcomed Shri Pabitra Margherita, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, during his inaugural visit to Fiji on May 12, 2025. This meeting underscored the long-standing historical and cultural ties between the two nations, which formalized diplomatic relations 54 years ago but trace back 146 years to the arrival of Indian indentured laborers in Fiji.

In remarks made during Fiji’s Girmit Day commemoration, President Lalabalavu emphasized the strength of the cultural bonds shared between Fiji and its significant Indian diaspora. He remarked, “Fiji is home to a large diaspora of Indian origin, and the bonds we share—culturally and historically—remain strong across generations.”

The discussions between President Lalabalavu and Minister Margherita centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation in several critical areas, including trade, health, agriculture, education, and importantly, climate change. The President noted that while their countries are geographically distant, both face significant threats from climate change, stating, “Fiji cannot fight this battle alone—we rely on partners like India.” He praised India’s leadership on global climate issues and highlighted its investments in Fiji’s green energy transition, including the solarization of State House.

Minister Margherita expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to him in Fiji, labeling it “God’s own country.” He reiterated India’s ongoing commitment to providing development support to Fiji, which includes plans for the establishment of a 100-bed super-specialty cardiology hospital in Nasinu, and a forthcoming memorandum of understanding on pharmacopeia. Furthermore, he urged Fijian students to take greater advantage of India’s scholarship programs, noting that only 75% of the scholarships offered are currently being utilized.

Minister Margherita also toured the solarization project at State House, symbolizing the collaborative commitment of both nations to sustainable development. This meeting not only reinforces the friendly and supportive relationship between Fiji and India but also demonstrates a shared vision for tackling common challenges and fostering growth through mutual cooperation.

The strong commitment demonstrated in this dialogue continues to pave the way for positive developments for both nations, highlighting the hope and collaboration that are central to the Fiji-India partnership.
