Fiji has received accolades for its remarkable linguistic diversity as discussions are underway to enhance Hindi education within the nation. During the Manak Hindi Conference, Indian High Commissioner Sunit Mehta praised the rich tapestry of languages in both India and Fiji. He highlighted the natural evolution of Hindi across various regions, emphasizing that dialectical variations are part of a language’s dynamic nature.
Mehta explained that language is not static; it adapts over time and space. He pointed out that the distinctions between Fiji Hindi and Standard Hindi exemplify a language that is alive and continuously growing. The High Commissioner underscored the importance of Manak Hindi, stating that its application in education, business, and the arts provides a unified linguistic identity that resonates on an international level.
“We are here today to discuss the evolving needs of Standard Hindi,” Mehta noted. He elaborated that Standard Hindi’s unique presence in various sectors reinforces its significance as it shapes a global identity for Hindi speakers.
Furthermore, he asserted that Fiji Hindi, commonly spoken in homes and communities, serves as a vital cultural bridge. “Manak Hindi and Fiji Hindi do not compete—they complement each other,” he emphasized. Mehta urged the audience to recognize that while languages evolve, Hindi remains a cherished means of communication and cultural expression.
Kamlesh Arya, President of Hindi Parishad Fiji, expressed aspirations to engage the younger generation in preserving their linguistic heritage. “We aim to hold discussions and innovate on the Hindi language to advance it socially and nationally,” he stated.
Highlighting the importance of youth participation, the High Commissioner encouraged the use of digital platforms such as blogs, social media, and online storytelling to engage the younger demographics. He reminded participants that Hindi embodies more than just communication; it is integral to cultural identity, thought processes, and emotional expression. This initiative reflects a positive commitment toward preserving and nurturing the Hindi language in Fiji, ensuring its vibrancy for future generations.
