The Fijian Ministry of Employment is currently in discussions with the Indian government to establish labor mobility agreements that aim to recruit workers from India. Minister Agni Deo Singh highlighted that a significant stipulation of this agreement requires Indian recruiting agents to pay a $125,000 bond before they can be licensed to recruit and export workers. This measure is intended to uphold the integrity of worker contracts and ensure accountability among recruiters.
Singh emphasized that the agreement aims to ensure that workers remain with their designated employers, stressing the seriousness with which any breaches will be handled. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of facilitating an efficient recruitment process while maintaining high labor standards.
Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, conveyed his optimism about supporting the Fijian government’s workforce requirements by utilizing a network of certified private recruitment agents. These agents are associated with the eMigrate portal, which helps match the skills needed by Fijian employers with prospective workers and ensures all necessary paperwork and skill verifications are completed prior to their arrival.
This new agreement comes in the wake of concerns raised regarding the qualifications of incoming labor, particularly in reference to previous issues with workers from Bangladesh. It signifies a commitment to enhancing the quality of labor sourced and ensuring only skilled workers enter the Fijian job market.
