Fiji has secured a direct supply of medicines from India’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturer, Pharmacopeia, as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Suva. The agreement was reached between India’s Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, and Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa.
This MOU is not only focused on enhancing the supply of medicines but also includes provisions for training and capacity building for Fiji’s Allied Health Cadres. This component aims to fortify the healthcare workforce in the country, ensuring that healthcare personnel are better equipped to meet the needs of the population.
Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing it as a cost-effective strategy to bridge existing gaps in the supply chain, address shortages of medications, and improve the overall healthcare framework in Fiji. Mehta noted that this partnership allows Fiji to access high-quality medicinal products from one of the world’s major pharmaceutical hubs.
The agreement signifies the strengthening of bilateral relations between Fiji and India, particularly as it coincides with the commemoration of Girmit Day, a day that reflects the deep historical ties between the two nations. Mehta referred to the MOU as a modern, meaningful addition to their ongoing collaboration, fostering hope for enhanced healthcare outcomes for Fijians.
In a broader context, the initiative aligns with Fiji’s ongoing efforts to address healthcare challenges, including previous discussions about the establishment of a 100-bed Super Specialty Hospital and the enhancement of healthcare infrastructure overall.
