Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has embraced Finland’s interest in enhancing cooperation in renewable energy, information and communication technology (ICT) development, and sustainable initiatives. The discussions took place during a courtesy meeting with Arto Haapea, Finland’s Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand, and the Solomon Islands, who is also the Ambassador-designate to Fiji and Samoa.
This marks Ambassador Haapea’s inaugural official visit to Fiji, symbolizing Finland’s dedication to fortifying bilateral relations with Pacific Island nations. During their meeting, opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, digital transformation, and trade were at the forefront of their discussions.
Ambassador Haapea reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to support Fiji’s clean energy transition and highlighted Finland’s own target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. The significant role of Finnish company Wartsila in Fiji’s energy landscape was also noted; Wartsila has contributed to enhancing Fiji’s energy resilience by supplying power generation systems in collaboration with Energy Fiji Limited. This partnership illustrates the promising potential for further advancements in Fiji’s renewable energy sector.
Deputy Prime Minister Kamikamica took the opportunity to underscore key advancements concerning Fiji’s National Digital Strategy, its commitment to clean energy, and ongoing export initiatives, including an Economic Partnership Agreement signed with the European Union. This agreement aims to enhance exports of valuable local products like fish and kava, bolstering Fiji’s economic potential.
The engagement with Finnish officials reflects a broader ambition for increasing international cooperation to tackle climate-related challenges and emphasizes Fiji’s proactive strategy in establishing fruitful partnerships that pave the way toward a sustainable future.
