The President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, officially welcomed the new Non-Resident Ambassador of Finland, His Excellency Arto Haapea, at a ceremony held at the State House. During the event, President Lalabalavu congratulated Ambassador Haapea on his appointment and conveyed his best wishes for a successful diplomatic tenure.
The two leaders discussed Fiji’s aspirations to strengthen bilateral relations with Finland, particularly in critical areas such as climate resilience and sustainable development. President Lalabalavu emphasized Fiji’s commitment to recovery from global challenges like climate change, highlighting existing cooperation through multilateral platforms, including UN peacekeeping efforts.
Ambassador Haapea expressed Finland’s eagerness to enhance economic cooperation with Fiji and support development initiatives. He brings substantial diplomatic experience from his previous roles in the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, notably as Director for East and Southeast Asia and Oceania, along with postings in India and China.
As part of the welcoming ceremony, Ambassador Haapea reviewed a 30-member Guard of Honour from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, accompanied by Honorary Aide-de-Camp Captain Robert Curuqara.
