Fiji and EU Join Forces for Climate Action: A $32.3 Million Initiative

The European Union Delegation to the Pacific and the Global Green Growth Institute have officially signed a grant agreement aimed at supporting the implementation of Fiji’s Climate Change Act 2021. The agreement, executed in Suva, signifies a collaborative effort to enhance climate action across various government sectors in Fiji.

This partnership aligns with the EU’s broader strategy to bolster Fiji’s ambitious climate objectives, including its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. EU Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, described the agreement as part of the “Time to Act towards implementing the Climate Change Act” initiative, which carries a valuation of $32.3 million. Plinkert emphasized the importance of empowering Fiji to be a leader in climate action both domestically and regionally, highlighting the necessity of inclusive participation across all sectors of Fijian society.

In addition to this grant, the EU has been instrumental in supporting Fiji through investment in renewable energy projects and initiatives aimed at ecosystem-based adaptation. Fiji’s Minister for Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, reiterated that the success of Fiji’s proactive climate response is contingent upon the financial and technical resources available, which this support aims to enhance.

Plinkert and regional officials remarked on the significance of developing effective guidelines and building the necessary capacity for implementing the Climate Change Act, ensuring that all aspects of governance are equipped for addressing climate change effectively. This includes stakeholder engagement across government, private sectors, and civil society, fostering a collective approach to the climate crisis.

Furthermore, the EU’s commitment extends to funding renewable energy developments, like the Qaliwana and Vatutokotoko hydropower projects, which are crucial in advancing Fiji’s transition to a low-carbon economy and reducing carbon emissions.

Fiji’s proactive stance in addressing climate change through this agreement and its involvement in international negotiations such as COP29 positions it as a leader among small island nations. By securing crucial climate funding and fostering international cooperation, Fiji exemplifies hope for the future in climate resilience and sustainable development.

This initiative not only emphasizes the vital role of collaborative international support but also inspires other nations facing similar challenges to engage actively in climate advocacy and take necessary actions towards sustainability.
