Fiji and Cuba Forge Stronger Diplomatic Ties for a Peaceful Future

Fiji has reiterated its dedication to enhancing diplomatic and development cooperation with Cuba, as affirmed during a recent meeting between Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini, and Elio Rodriguez Perdomo, the Cuban Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations. The discussions focused on reaffirming bilateral ties and a mutual commitment to peace, consistent with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s “Oceans of Peace” initiative, which emphasizes respect for international law and the UN Charter.

In this context, Ambassador Tarakinikini, who is also Fiji’s non-resident Ambassador to Cuba, submitted his credentials to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. This diplomatic engagement marks a significant moment in strengthening the relationship between the two nations, which has been in place since 2002 when diplomatic relations were first established. Notably, Cuba has been instrumental in medical collaboration, sending healthcare professionals to Fiji and providing scholarships for Fijian students pursuing medical studies on the island nation. As of 2025, three Fijian students are near completing their medical education in Cuba, underscoring the ongoing commitment to building capabilities in healthcare.

This reinforcement of ties comes amidst Fiji’s broader efforts to cultivate international partnerships, resembling its previous commitments to cooperation with countries such as Korea and India. Recently, Fiji has also expanded its engagements to involve development projects and initiatives that aim to enhance healthcare and infrastructure, signaling a proactive approach to its foreign policy and international cooperation.

Overall, this strengthening relationship not only holds promise for enhanced mutual benefits but also embodies a hopeful outlook for further collaborative efforts that can contribute positively to the development goals of both nations.
