Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing diplomatic and development cooperation with Cuba during a recent meeting between Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini, and Elio Rodriguez Perdomo, the Cuban Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations. The discussions emphasized a shared dedication to peace and the reinforcement of bilateral ties, aligning with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s “Oceans of Peace” initiative that advocates for respect for international law and the UN Charter.
During this diplomatic engagement, Ambassador Tarakinikini, who serves as Fiji’s non-resident Ambassador to Cuba, presented his credentials to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. This marks a significant step in deepening the relationship between Fiji and Cuba, which began in 2002 when the two nations established diplomatic relations. Significantly, Cuba has played a vital role in Fijian healthcare by sending medical professionals to assist in the islands and offering scholarships for Fijian students pursuing medical education in Cuba. Currently, three Fijian students are on track to complete their medical studies in Cuba by 2025, reflecting a sustained commitment to bolstering healthcare capabilities in Fiji.
This deepening partnership aligns with Fiji’s overall strategy to foster international collaborations, reminiscent of its commitments with countries like Korea and India. Recently, Fiji has expanded its focus to include development projects aimed at improving healthcare and infrastructure, showcasing a proactive approach in its foreign policy.
This strengthening of ties between Fiji and Cuba not only opens doors for mutual benefits but also embodies a positive vision for future collaborative efforts, which can significantly contribute to the development objectives of both nations. The ongoing commitment to international cooperation signifies a hopeful trajectory towards collective growth and enhanced wellbeing for their respective populations.
