Fiji and Cuba: A Growing Alliance for Health and Diplomacy

Fiji and Cuba are reinforcing their friendly bilateral relations, both in direct and broader contexts. Kiti Temo, Chief of Protocol from Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, extended warm greetings to the Cuban government and its citizens as they celebrated Cuba’s national day.

In her address, Temo highlighted Cuba’s enduring support for Fiji, particularly through medical scholarships that have greatly benefited local and regional students. This partnership began in 2002 with the establishment of diplomatic relations and has grown stronger over the years, rooted in shared values such as global justice and equality.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present at the celebration of Cuba’s National Day at the newly opened Cuban Embassy in Fiji. This occasion, observed every January 1st, holds great significance as it marks Cuba’s independence and national identity, bringing together diplomats and distinguished guests in honor of the event.

Recent diplomatic engagements, including discussions between Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN and the Cuban Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations, have underscored the commitment of both nations to peace and cooperation. Their discussions reaffirmed both countries’ intention to strengthen bilateral relations, aligning with Fiji’s “Oceans of Peace” initiative.

The collaboration extends especially into the healthcare sector, showcasing both nations’ aspirations for better public health outcomes, as evidenced by the scholarships awarded to Fijian students for medical education in Cuba. Currently, several students are nearing the completion of their studies, further enhancing Fiji’s healthcare sector.

As Fiji and Cuba continue to support each other, there is an optimistic outlook for ongoing collaborations, addressing shared challenges in healthcare and other sectors, thus promoting a relationship that embodies positive diplomatic efforts and mutual growth.
