Fiji and China Strengthen Ties: A New Era of Cooperation?

China views Fiji as a key partner in the South Pacific, as emphasized by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing on Sunday. Premier Li pointed out that Fiji is the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China.

Prime Minister Rabuka expressed Fiji’s commitment to China as a dependable partner, stating that the country adheres to the one-China principle and supports initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative. He mentioned that Fiji is eager to enhance cooperation with China across various sectors, including the economy, trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity.

Li reaffirmed China’s steadfast support for the Fijian people’s chosen development path and expressed readiness to collaborate on the agreements established between the two nations’ leaders. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a friendship built on trust and support, while promoting the steady development of their comprehensive strategic partnership, ultimately benefiting both nations.

The Premier also suggested that the two countries utilize their complementary strengths to deepen collaboration in infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation, all under the Belt and Road Initiative framework. He pledged that China would increase imports from Fiji and encourage Chinese companies to invest in the island nation.

Additionally, Li indicated that China supports Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and aims to work in tandem with Fiji and other island nations to promote various global initiatives focused on development, security, and civilization. The overarching goal is to foster a fair and balanced multipolar world while encouraging inclusive global economic growth.
