Fiji and China Reinforce Ties: A New Era of Cooperation Awaits

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met with Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of China, in Beijing yesterday. This significant meeting underscored the long-standing relationship between Fiji and China, emphasizing their shared goals and interests, which have fostered a comprehensive strategic partnership grounded in mutual trust and respect.

Upon his arrival at the Great Hall of the People, Prime Minister Rabuka was received with a guard of honor made up of 130 members from the People’s Liberation Army. During their discussions, he expressed appreciation on behalf of the Fijian delegation for the warm hospitality extended by the Chinese government and its people, noting the overwhelming nature of the reception.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the One China Policy, which has been fundamental to Fiji’s diplomatic relations with China. He highlighted China’s steadfast support for Fiji during challenging times in 1987, 2000, and 2006 when other traditional partners had distanced themselves.

The two leaders discussed several priority areas, including poverty reduction, infrastructure development, land and maritime connectivity, and the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as rural revitalization. PM Rabuka stated that Fiji aims to implement a comprehensive infrastructure development program in collaboration with China to enhance the country’s infrastructure in the future.

He recognized the Belt and Road Initiative and appreciated the assistance provided by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) regarding the upgrade of 82 kilometers of the Vanua Levu road network.

On regional matters, PM Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to regionalism through the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which aims to address common challenges like climate change, ocean conservation, and conflict resolution.

Additionally, the Prime Minister acknowledged China’s support in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through the Global Development Initiative.

In response, Premier Li reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Fiji in areas of mutual interest, especially in poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He emphasized that China would continue to bolster its cooperation with Fiji via the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative and actively promote the Global Development Initiative.

Premier Li expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Rabuka for the opportunity to meet, reaffirming their dedication to strengthening the enduring relationship between China and Fiji.
