China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, expressed a strong desire for the establishment of direct flights between the Chinese mainland and Fiji “as soon as possible.” He made this statement during a recent event in Suva commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Ambassador Zhou highlighted that China is prepared to collaborate with Fijian authorities to initiate these direct flights promptly, which would likely attract more Chinese tourists to Fiji and bolster the local economy. He welcomed Fijians to visit China and experience its vast offerings.

In his remarks, Zhou emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation in strengthening Fiji-China relations, stating that fostering friendships between people is essential for developing solid bilateral ties. He announced that China would continue to send art troupes and medical teams to Fiji and provide Chinese Government Scholarships, further promoting cultural exchanges and understanding between the two nations.

Efforts are underway to enhance Fiji’s profile as a tourist destination for Chinese travelers. Last year, Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways, and Trip.com Group signed a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding aimed at increasing Fiji’s visibility in the Greater China market and promoting the “Where Happiness Comes Naturally” brand. Currently, Fiji Airways operates flights to China through a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong Airlines.
