Fiji and China have celebrated their enduring relationship with a vibrant gathering in Suva to mark the Year of the Horse. The event underscored the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, highlighted by remarks from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka. He noted that the horse symbolizes strength, perseverance, and renewal—qualities that reflect the Fiji–China partnership.
Gavoka emphasized that 2023 marks a significant milestone, commemorating 170 years since the arrival of the first Chinese settlers in Fiji, as well as 50 years of diplomatic relations. He acknowledged the contributions of the Chinese community, stating that their ancestors played an integral role in shaping Fiji’s multicultural identity and boosting its economy.
In her address, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, Jenny Seeto, celebrated the inclusivity of the event and expressed gratitude to the organizers and sponsors for bringing the celebration to life. Seeto also highlighted the important support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Fiji and the China Cultural Center, honoring the elders who laid the foundation for the Chinese community in Fiji.
As families, community leaders, and officials gathered in Suva, the celebration emphasized a renewed commitment to unity, resilience, and collaborative progress between Fiji and China, heralding a promising year ahead.
