Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the One China Policy, describing it as the foundation of diplomatic relations between Fiji and China. During a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing, Rabuka noted China’s support for Fiji during challenging times in the past, specifically citing the political crises of 1987, 2000, and 2006, when traditional allies distanced themselves.
The leaders addressed key areas of cooperation, including poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, land and maritime connectivity, the Belt and Road Initiative, and rural revitalization. Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s efforts to implement a comprehensive infrastructure development program with China aimed at significantly enhancing the nation’s infrastructure in the coming years.
He acknowledged the Belt and Road Initiative and praised the China International Development Cooperation Agency for its support in upgrading the 82-kilometer Vanua Levu road network.
On regional matters, Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s commitment to regionalism through the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, focusing on shared challenges such as climate change, ocean preservation, and conflict resolution.
In response, Premier Li expressed China’s ongoing support for Fiji in areas of mutual interest, especially poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He pledged to further enhance cooperation between the two nations under the Belt and Road Initiative and to advance the Global Development Initiative.
