Fiji has reaffirmed its dedication to regional diplomacy by participating in the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Xiamen, China. Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua welcomed China’s commitment to supporting developmental projects, emphasizing areas such as trade, health, and climate resilience as part of the 50-year partnership between China and the Pacific nations.

During the meeting, China announced the introduction of 200 small-scale projects designed to improve living conditions in Pacific communities, which includes initiatives like clean water accessibility and electrification that will directly benefit Fiji. Moreover, the initiative also encompasses sending seven medical teams to assist Pacific nations, further enhancing health cooperation.

In his discussions, Qereqeretabua highlighted the importance of mutual respect for sovereignty, which aligns with the guiding principles discussed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in prior engagements. These principles reinforce the significance of political, economic, cultural, and regional cooperation among Pacific Island nations.

The meeting’s agenda focused on building a collaborative future, where Fiji is poised to play an active role in shaping regional partnerships. By pledging to respect Pacific sovereignty, China aims to strengthen cooperation across sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.

This ongoing collaboration presents a hopeful outlook for Fiji and other Pacific nations, fostering economic stability and sustainability. Such positive developments reflect a commitment to regional resilience and shared growth, indicating a promising trajectory for partnerships in the Pacific region.
