China considers Fiji a crucial partner in the South Pacific, a sentiment expressed by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his recent meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing.

Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to form diplomatic relations with China. In response, Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s view of China as a dependable ally, reaffirming their commitment to the one-China principle and support for initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative.

Rabuka expressed Fiji’s eagerness to enhance cooperation with China across various sectors, including economy and trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to unlock new opportunities for bilateral relations.

Li reiterated China’s steadfast support for the Fijian people in their chosen development path and expressed willingness to collaborate in fulfilling the mutual agreements established by the leaders of both nations. He stated that China seeks to maintain a trusting friendship with Fiji and to strengthen exchanges at all levels, promoting the steady growth of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Li underlined the importance of leveraging each other’s strengths to deepen collaboration in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation through the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation framework. He also indicated that China would enhance imports of Fijian products and encourage Chinese investments in Fiji.

Additionally, Li affirmed China’s support for Pacific Island nations in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and collaborating on the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilisation Initiative, all aimed at fostering a fair and balanced multipolar world and supporting inclusive economic growth globally.
