The Chinese community in Fiji, along with dignitaries and local officials, came together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Vineyard Palace in Suva on Sunday. This significant event highlighted the strengthening ties between China and Fiji and showcased the vital role of the Chinese community in Fijian society. China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, shared insights about the partnership during the event, recognizing the contributions of Fijians of Chinese descent to the economy. “The relationship between China and Fiji has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic ties 49 years ago,” Mr. Zhou stated, pointing out the multifaceted growth in economic, political, and cultural exchanges. The recent visit by Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to China reaffirmed these connections, leading to agreements that will enhance cooperation and mutual benefits.
Mr. Zhou emphasized China’s significant investment in Fiji, which has contributed to its economic growth through infrastructure projects and trade, including the construction of roads and schools and assistance during natural disasters. These efforts illustrate China’s pivotal role in Fijian development.
Regarding the Mid-Autumn Festival, Mr. Zhou explained that it symbolizes family reunion and prosperity in Chinese culture, taking place on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month when the full moon represents completeness and unity. This year’s celebration in Fiji not only honored the festival but also recognized the deep ties between Chinese culture and Fijian society. Notable figures, including Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and government ministers, attended, underscoring their appreciation for the contributions of the Chinese community. Mr. Zhou noted the crucial role of the Chinese community in fostering relations between the two nations since the arrival of Chinese immigrants in 1855, whose efforts have enriched various aspects of Fijian life.
He also mentioned that the Chinese community has organized numerous cultural events, promoting understanding and support for charitable causes in Fiji. Furthermore, during crises like natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, the community has demonstrated solidarity and generosity, contributing to the well-being of Fijian society.
Mr. Zhou highlighted that the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China marks significant progress and transformation under the leadership of the Communist Party. Key achievements include strides in poverty alleviation, infrastructure, and environmental protection. China’s dedication to global partnerships is illustrated by initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, which aim to foster global cooperation and mutual benefit.
Looking ahead, Mr. Zhou noted that Fiji’s strong relationship with China presents opportunities for further development. As both nations anticipate celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year, there is a collective vision for deepening cooperation. Additionally, 2024 will also mark the 170th anniversary of the Chinese community’s presence in Fiji, offering a chance to reflect on their historical contributions. Mr. Zhou expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the potential for growth and collaboration between China and Fiji.
