Speaker of Parliament Filimoni Jitoko recently called on the Fijian diaspora in China to seize the opportunities that have been made available to them. He, along with a delegation of Fijian parliamentarians, is currently visiting China with the support of the Chinese government.
During a meeting held in Beijing, Jitoko emphasized the vital role that Fijians abroad play as ambassadors for their home country. He urged them to contribute to the relationships between Fiji and China, underscoring how their involvement could strengthen ties between the two nations. The delegation’s trip is described as a fact-finding mission aimed at gathering ideas and practices that could be beneficial to Fiji.
Jitoko acknowledged that while he serves as the figurehead of the delegation, it is the other ministers present who will be directly involved in absorbing and bringing back insights applicable across various sectors in Fiji.
This visit occurs against a backdrop of deepening diplomatic relations between Fiji and China, with a history that spans nearly 50 years. In a related context, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is scheduled to make an official visit to China soon, with a focus on further advancing bilateral cooperation.
Such engagements and exchanges hold promise for fostering economic and cultural ties that could yield mutual benefits for both Fiji and China. The collaborative spirit reflects a hopeful outlook, emphasizing the potential for shared growth and prosperity.
By strengthening connections with their diaspora, Fiji aims not only to enhance international relations but also to explore new avenues of development that can uplift both nations in the years to come.
